My friend and colleague, Dr. Carol Twigg, is the founder and CEO of the National Center for Academic Transformation. She and her colleagues at NCAT worked with 30 colleges and universities to pioneer what I refer to frequently in this blog as the "common course redesign strategy." The NCAT site has a wealth of resources and ideas for those wishing to improve learning outcomes while simultaneously reducing direct instructional expenses where it counts most -- in high-enrollment courses that are common to most colleges and universities. You can also subscribe to an informative e-bulletin from NCAT. I should disclose that I'm one of the founding members of the NCAT board.

Economics Nobel Laureate Ronald Coase observed in the 1930s that that organizations were growing in size and, thus, becoming more bureaucratic, all because there was too much friction in externally acquiring the services and products necessary to the provision of an organization's core products and/or services. Downes and Mui make a persuasive case that the Internet changes that internally focused paradigm by removing the friction from external sourcing, thus enabling new "leaner, meaner" operational models in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors.
