"Institutional performance" (IP) signifies an interest in three critical questions that are increasingly being asked of today’s higher education leader:
- What is your organization's vision and mission?
- Have you formulated mission-centric performance indicators?
- Have you gathered "hard" evidence about mission performance, including academic outcomes and unit expenses—per-student or per-student-FTE expenses?
There are other names for "institutional performance." "Institutional effectiveness" has been the most persistently used synonym but has seldom had the same quantitative, "hard-evidence" connotation that today attaches to IP and its other synonyms, such as "accountability," "productivity" and "return on investment."
