    Economics Nobel Laureate Ronald Coase observed in the 1930s that that organizations were growing in size and, thus, becoming more bureaucratic, all because there was too much friction in externally acquiring the services and products necessary to the provision of an organization's core products and/or services. Downes and Mui make a persuasive case that the Internet changes that internally focused paradigm by removing the friction from external sourcing, thus enabling new "leaner, meaner" operational models in both the for-profit and nonprofit sectors. Downes' and Mui's "killer app" is Thomas Friedman's set of "flattenting" forces. (*****)

What is "institutional performance?"

"Institutional performance" (IP) signifies an interest in three critical questions that are increasingly being asked of today’s higher education leader:

  1. What is your organization's vision and mission?

  2. Have you formulated mission-centric performance indicators?

  3. Have you gathered "hard" evidence about mission performance, including academic outcomes and unit expenses—per-student or per-student-FTE expenses?

There are other names for "institutional performance." "Institutional effectiveness" has been the most persistently used synonym but has seldom had the same quantitative, "hard-evidence" connotation that today attaches to IP and its other synonyms, such as "accountability," "productivity" and "return on investment."
