As part of their "voluntary system of accountability" initiative, which created "College Portrait," NASULGC and AASCU also recommended that their member institutions and systems adopt the Collegiate Learning Assessment (or an alternative assessment) to sample students' basic fluencies and critical thinking skills. The University of Wisconsin System is committing to a plan that could eventually lead to tests for a sample of freshmen and seniors designed to measure skills such as problem solving and communication.
